SOF Fire Starter Kit a few weeks ago.
I'm always weary of a mechanical device and its possibility to fail. I've used this model quite a bit without any problems. It's probably due to it's simple design.
The SOF Survival match is basically a one handed fire starting device with an internal (very thick) 12mm fire steel with an internal carbide striker. The case is very rugged and features a lanyard hole to secure the device to you. It's also very compact, measuring about 4 inches.
The ferro rod is of excellent quality and a few strikes will drop magnesium infused shaving onto your pile to ease the lighting process. I've tried the SOF Survival Match on every tinder possible; it even shined with natural tinder options. The case also protects the ferro rod when not in use.
By placing the ferro rod on the tinder pile and pressing the carbide striking plate against the ferro rod while simultaneously pushing down it will emit a shower of sparks. It usually only take one strike to get a fire going.
The SOF Survival Match is a breeze to operate. It has shown to be a very dependable fire starting device. It's also just as easy to use with your non-dominate hand.
If you do have a mechanical failure the ferro rod can be used as a traditional ferro rod by removing from the plastic housing and using a striker (such as the spine of your knife.)
Like I said above, I highly suggest you carry a one handed operated fire starting device. Also know that you should carry 3 methods of fire craft as a back up.
The SOF Survival Match retails for around $19 U.S. Dollars. Check out the SOF Survival Match as well as Web-tex's other survival products.
